I have read several pretty good articles about cow size in the last few months. They all expressed concerns about cows being too big to maximize profit – especially after cattle prices crash. Those articles are basically saying the same things we have been saying for the last 40 years. In fact, some of the statements made in those articles look a little too familiar.
No matter how good or how bad your environment is, you can run substantially more smaller cows on the same acres. The fact that small cows can wean a higher percent of their own body weight than big cows will substantially increase total pounds and profit. Folks, this is a no-brainer!
While everyone is talking about the benefits of 1100 to 1200-pound cows, Pharo Cattle Company® continues to be one of very few places you can find bulls that will actually produce 1100 to 1200-pound cows. If you want to produce efficient and profitable momma cows, you must use bulls that were produced by efficient and profitable momma cows. Like begets like!
Quote Worth Re-Quoting
“Back in the old days, we selected for more frame and more pounds per animal. Now, we are selecting for optimum size and more pounds per acre.” ~ Don Guilford – Manitoba cow-calf producer
