Last week, I talked about the fear of failure and fear of being different. People are held captive by this fear and are afraid to risk. Fear overrides reason and common sense. Fear is irrational.
My wife (Erica) and I are taking a trip to Hawaii this week to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We’ve had this trip booked for about 8 months and Erica has been after me for the last two months to buy some shorts to wear there. I’ve ignored her, and after procrastinating the entire time, she finally bought me a wardrobe. She cornered me the day before we left and made me try everything on. You might ask, what was the big deal?
It was “different.” As you can imagine, tropical clothing is just not my style. Even after Erica told me we won’t know anyone there, no one will see me wearing it (and my pasty, white legs), and that it will be too hot and humid to wear boots and jeans, I still wasn’t convinced. She was challenging what I was comfortable with.
I was able to overcome my fear in this silly example with much persistence, patience, and love from Erica (and a friend who had already been there). If I would have asked my “cowboy” friends (who have never even been to Hawaii), they would have probably said I would be fine in boots and jeans.
How do we find the courage to make the changes in our cattle operations that we know are necessary? First, stop listening to people who have no idea! Seek out people who have already made the change, people who are willing to help.
