I shared the following statement in a 1996 Pharo Cattle Company® newsletter. I don’t know where it originated – but I do remember discussing it at length with a few of the beef industry’s very first Herd Quitters three decades ago.
The cowman is an amazing individual. He can go three days without a drink of water, three weeks without something to eat – and three generations without a new idea.
Unfortunately, this statement is just as true today as it was 30 years ago. Most family-owned cow-calf operations are at least 20 years behind where they could and should be. They are always way too slow to change what needs to be changed. The primary reason for this slowness is that most family farms and ranches are multi-generational – and the older generation never wants to change anything. It’s true!
