We often try to manipulate numerous variables to get a desired outcome. Many of these variables are interrelated or antagonistic, creating an infinite number of possibilities. Sometimes, we need to take a step back and analyze what it is that we are trying to achieve.

Shane Parrish shared a quote on variables this week that I thought was helpful:

“The only controllable variable in any situation is you. Oddly, it’s the last one people adjust.”

We have heard it said that we are our own worst enemy. Some of us are so OCD that we need to stop rearranging chairs on the deck of the Titanic and start thinking about getting off the ship! Nowhere is this more evident than in the cattle industry today. We are so smitten with high calf prices that we ignore the iceberg we are headed towards.

Producers have the means right now to make substantial improvements to their herd through better genetics. Most, however, will spend record profits on toys and gadgets that they really don’t need. A few, on the other hand, will do what is necessary now so that they can continue to enjoy profits into the future.

Bulls are going to be expensive this year no matter where you buy them. Why not buy bulls that will move your herd in the right direction? Why not buy bulls that have more value (breed more cows for more years)? Why not buy bulls that are guaranteed for calving ease so you don’t have to pull calves or check heifers around the clock? Why not make life easier?

Pharo Cattle Company® is here to help with better genetics and a support system that will help keep you on the right track. Take advantage of it while you can. Calf prices won’t stay this high forever.

Know the difference between necessary and discretionary expenses.” ~ Alexa Von Tobel
