Shane Parrish shared a quote on inputs this week that I thought was very pertinent to the cattle industry:
“Focus on the inputs you control and the outputs will follow.”
Sounds so simple, yet we make it so complicated! If we want to get to a low-input herd, and reduce our dependency on excessive feeding, supplements, antibiotics, vaccines, wormers, fly control, etc., we must start with the right genetics. You can’t stop supplementing a mainstream herd. They will fall apart as soon as the supplements stop.
Selling out and starting over with the right genetics is not in the cards for most producers either. The easiest way to make the transition is to buy bulls that will produce low-input daughters. Once the daughters get into the herd, then the supplements can be reduced. Cows that can’t produce without supplements will start to exit the herd. In a few years you will have transitioned to a low-input herd!
I have little sympathy for farmers and ranchers who are crying about calving heifers around the clock and pulling a large percentage of them. This outcome is the result of inputs they didn’t control. They obviously didn’t buy PCC® calving ease bulls. If they had, this wouldn’t have been an issue!
As the older generation ages out, what is going to draw the younger generation back into farming and ranching? I can guarantee you, it won’t be midnight calving checks, wrangling poor disposition cattle, or feeding hay all winter long!
Folks, there is a better way. If you want to reduce your farming and ranching stress, have more free time to enjoy life, and/or recruit your kids or grandkids to take over the ranch, buying bulls from PCC? is a no-brainer! Pharo Cattle Company® is the industry leader in low-input cattle. Let us help you get your life back.
