If you are producing your own replacement heifers, then grass efficiency may be the most important trait to select for when purchasing bulls. What is grass efficiency? Johan Zietsman, a very astute rancher and consultant from Zimbabwe, says, “Grass-efficient animals will look like eight pounds of sugar in a five-pound sack.”

Pictured above are two grass-efficient PCC® herd sires in their working clothes. Notice how tight-fitting their hide is! In contrast, most of today’s mainstream bulls look like five pounds of sugar in an eight-pound sack.

We created a formula in 2018 that allows us to score the bulls we sell for grass efficiency. This formula is very similar to the one Johan Zietsman has been using. Bulls with a grass efficiency score of 5 will be the absolute best at producing early-maturing, highly-fertile, long-lasting replacement females.

Pharo Cattle Company® is your only source for bulls that have been scored for grass efficiency. We are also your only source for bulls that have been evaluated and scored for hair coat, fly resistance, fleshing ability, thickness, muscling, and masculinity.
