I briefly met PJ Budler several years ago at one of our Texas bull sales, but I did not take time to get to know him. I regret that. Fortunately, I met up with PJ again in January when I was asked to speak to a group of cattlemen in South Africa.

The more time I spent with PJ, the more I liked him. I soon discovered that his philosophies about cattle, ranching, and life in general clicked almost perfectly with mine. PJ is just as opinionated as me – but he is much nicer about it.

PJ Budler was raised on a 5th generation cattle operation in South Africa. In 2012, he and his wife, Koula, relocated to Texas, where he eventually became International Business Manager for Trans Ova Genetics. PJ is very well recognized internationally.

PJ stays very busy consulting, speaking, and judging cattle shows around the world. He has judged 108 different breeds of cattle in 51 different countries. PJ is one of few cattle judges who will not tolerate structural incorrectness. I find that quite refreshing!

Sadly, every status quo beef publication I subscribe to is chock-full of pictures of structurally incorrect cows and bulls. That’s the reason I write so much about structural correctness. In an article PJ wrote, he said, “Skeletal structure is paramount to functionality and longevity. Don’t compromise on structural soundness, ever!”

As many of our subscribers know, I asked PJ to speak at all three of our pre-sale meetings in April. PJ was very well received. It was a treat to walk through the bulls with him and listen to his thoughts and comments.

Immediately after our spring sales, I asked PJ to submit some articles for our PCC Updates. He has submitted a few very profound articles. PJ also has an insightful, outside-the-box article in our Summer 2026 Newsletter. I consider PJ to be brilliant when it comes to genetics and structural correctness.

BREAKING NEWS: PJ has recently agreed to work with Pharo Cattle Company® on a regular basis at several different levels. That is exciting news! One of our new projects is a monthly YouTube discussion between PJ and me. It will be entitled “The Herd Quitter® Roundtable.”

These recordings will be shared on the third Wednesday of every month in the PCC Update. Our very first episode will come out in next week’s PCC Update. We will discuss PJ’s recent Angus Tour in Europe. If you would like to be notified when these discussions come out, click on the link below.
