It is possible to make a very good living as a rancher – in good times and in not-so-good times. The key is to focus on increasing pounds per acre – instead of on increasing pounds per cow. They are NOT the same thing!
The status quo beef industry has been focused on the wrong thing for 50 years. Focusing on pounds per cow (weaning weight) will actually reduce pounds and profit per acre. Unfortunately, this will continue to go unnoticed by most producers until calf prices take a nosedive.
