Some people drag themselves through life. They are stuck in the same routine, day-in and day-out. They live for some future point in time when things will change, like retirement.

We start these habits young, always looking forward to when we are older. First, it’s 16 so we can drive, then 18 so we can be an adult and vote, then 21 so we can drink, then 25 to get a better rate on our car insurance and on and on. We treat happiness or fulfillment as something just out of reach.

We find a job at the local mine, or factory, or drill rig because that’s what’s available. The dreams of our youth get pushed aside and replaced with practicality, usefulness, and a steady income. While our contribution to society is paid in 10 to 12-hour shifts, our hearts aren’t in it. We become zombies addicted to a steady paycheck.

A quote in Shane Parrish’s blog this week by Philosopher Howard Thurman counters this mindset: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive. Because what the world needs most is more people who have come alive.”

To “come alive” means to follow your dreams, to turn your dreams into goals, and to work towards achieving those goals. Maybe you want to quit your town job and start ranching full time? Sit down, figure out a budget, set some goals, then go after them. Stop settling for what’s available and start chasing what you want!

America is full of opportunities for those who pursue them. Start pursuing the things that make you come alive.
