If you are buying bulls this spring, you will probably pay more than you ever have in your life. However, keep in mind that you’ve been selling calves for more than you ever have in your life.

Many spring bull sales are averaging $12-14,000. If you’re going to spend that much money, it only makes sense to buy bulls that will take your program in the right direction. Here are some thoughts that can help you make a good decision.

First of all, let’s be honest: if you have a herd of random sale barn cows whose calves will all go to slaughter, just buy the cheapest, biggest bull you can find. You don’t need to worry about genetics for the future. Save the good bulls for someone else.

However, if you’re like most producers who maintain their herd by adding heifers, consider this:
Some ranchers believe it’s cheaper to buy bred heifers. At $5,000 a pop, what happens when prices fall? Also, are they high-maintenance genetics? Will you have to pull calves? How many will fail to rebreed? The price gets higher as you go.

If you raise your own replacements, you need to consider these traits: Calving-ease — 80% of PCC’s bulls will work on heifers. Future maintenance costs — PCC® cattle can efficiently produce more pounds of beef per acre without expensive supplements. Also consider Fertility, Longevity, and Disposition. These are all traits that PCC selects for because they affect your bottom line. These are the genetics you want to add to your herd. Lastly, consider the protection of a one-year guarantee — it may be more valuable now than ever before.

If you buy a bull this spring, it will be expensive. Why not buy one that will take your herd in the right direction? PCC® has spring sales in Texas, Missouri and Colorado. For more info, call 800-311-0995 or go to pharocattle.com. I’ll see you next time on the Herd Quitter® Minute.
