Technological advances in cattle management and operations are excelling at a rapid pace. Things like virtual fence and record-keeping software have the potential to make ranchers’ lives easier.
Drovers had a recent article with information concerning technology. Some of it was good and some of it was “industry speak.” If you have been following PCC® long enough, you should be able to discern which is which.
What stuck out to me was that technology does not replace fundamentals. In other words, you must have some knowledge of what works and what doesn’t.
Now, before all you Luddites start cheering, follow me for a second. Jamie Courter, University of Missouri beef extension specialist, quotes longtime industry leader Donnell Brown, “You don’t have to change, but you have to compete with those who do.” Let that sink in.
Courter continues, “We have to find a way to be better, to be more efficient, and be different.” Might as well just say “profitable and enjoyable.” That would be different!
Folks, technology is a tool. We should be leveraging it just like any other tool to our advantage. Early adopters are the ones who seem to benefit the most, so don’t wait too long.
