You need a competitive advantage if you are going to succeed in the cattle industry. The current market may be a little more forgiving, but markets fluctuate while costs continue to rise.

A competitive advantage isn’t always a hack or a shortcut. Shane Parrish talks about a different kind of advantage in his recent blog:

“We tend to think the people who get ahead have more talent, better connections, greater opportunities, or better luck. Sometimes they do. But some of the strongest advantages aren’t things you’re given. They’re things you do. Most people already know what they should do. The hard part is doing it when it’s boring, the payoff is far away, or no one is watching. That’s where your advantage comes from.”

I think the real advantage is consistency: consistent budgets, consistent planning, and consistent discipline. Don’t be fooled by the high market; it will eventually come down. Make sure you set yourself up for success no matter what the market does.
