I recently took a couple of my PCC® bulls to the bull stud to get collected. One, Noble 4900N, was going to stay for a while, as he was getting collected for export to Australia. The second bull, Mach 3 5416M, was a walk-in that I wanted to collect just in case something happened to him.
Noble had been pulled from cows for about a week and was ready to collect. I wasn’t sure how Mach 3 would collect because I just pulled him out of the cows the night before. We had to gather him with a cow because she was in heat. Normally, they want bulls separated from cows for three to four days before collecting them, but I thought I would try.
I wanted about 100 straws, and they thought it would take about three collections. They collected him twice before analyzing the first collection. It turns out that he collected 229 straws on two collections. When analyzed, the semen was of exceptional quality.
The collection technician wanted to know what we were doing for the bull to collect that well. We discussed our mineral program and that the bull was developed on forage. He wanted to know what they could do to get other bulls to collect better. In the end, I said, “You need better genetics.” We both got a good laugh out of that.
The bull stud has seen thousands of bulls. It made me think, what better way to improve the fertility in your herd than by using bulls that impress the bull stud! My PCC bulls continue to deliver on all the traits that matter most.
