I love the summer because school is out and kids have a chance to be kids again. I feel more “learning” happens when kids aren’t in school. I think the same is true for adults. Many of the things that we are good at, we didn’t go to school for.
Shane Parrish shares my sentiment: “Ask anyone how they got really good at what they do, and there is one answer they won’t tell you: … School. They learned it on their own. Not because there was a test to pass, but because they were curious.”
Curiosity is a great motivator for learning new things. Having an eagerness to learn and adapt is a prerequisite for success. I’m not saying you can’t learn at school. It can happen. However, I tend to think most public schools are leaning towards indoctrination camps forcing a certain political ideology.
Educational opportunities don’t have to be tied to school. I have learned more just talking to people than I ever have in a classroom. In fact, one of the best tools is peer review. Bull workdays is a great example of this.
Evaluating bulls and having to explain your reasoning, then being willing to accept constructive criticism and adjust your scores is a great learning experience. Add in some humor, whit, sarcasm and good-natured teasing and you start learning really fast!
This year, we will get to learn some South African humor, as PJ Budler will be in attendance. This will be a show worth watching. In fact, someone should probably be charging admission!
