In last week’s PCC® Update, we discussed how cows and bulls should be Wedge Shaped – but in opposite directions. Unfortunately, most mainstream cows and bulls are rectangular shaped.

Back in the 1980s, Jan Bonsma said, “In most breeds, the show standards for bulls and heifers are based on the conformation of the ideal prizewinning fat stock steer. No wonder so many prizewinning bulls are feminine in appearance, while so many females are sterile or subfertile.” Folks, this is more true today than it was back then.

Food for Thought… If you ask three men to sit side by side on a bench, where will their bodies be touching? At the shoulders. If you ask their wives to do the same thing, where will their bodies be touching? At the hips – as it should be. The same should be true with cattle.

A bull should look like a bull. Masculine bulls will produce feminine and fertile cows. Here at Pharo Cattle Company®, we place extreme importance on masculinity. When we are evaluating a bull that lacks masculinity, I jokingly say, “$3500 won’t buy much of a bull – but it will buy a pretty good steer with nuts.” Then we cull the bull!

NOTE: We will have five Bull Workday events from August 18 through September 2 in four different states and Canada. Because we are transparent about everything, we invite everyone to attend these events.
