A big part of success is positive self-talk. This is one of the most difficult things to coach. Having a positive attitude is 90% of the battle. Shane Parrish agrees and his blog this week makes a good point:
“Your inner monologue determines your outer actions. The most powerful story in the world is the one you tell yourself.”
Setting goals is not enough. You must believe that you can achieve your goals. The belief is what directs your actions. Belief gets you through setbacks and pushes you forward.
Belief is fueled by what you tell yourself. Your thoughts direct your actions. A study was conducted in sports that showed that athletes who thought they were slower actually performed worse. Conversely, when they thought about being fast, they performed better.
The mind can direct the body to follow subconscious thoughts. This is why it is so important not to entertain negative thoughts. Sayings like, “What you think about, you bring about,” are good reminders to stay positive.
Make positive self-talk a habit. Not only will this help with achieving your goals, but it also tends to make people feel more fulfilled, which leads to happiness. It also makes you much more likable and fun to be around.
For parents, teachers, and coaches, this is a must. Kids are like sponges and will soak up your positive energy. Kids learn confidence and positive self-talk by seeing it emulated.
