Pigment is not just a bonus; it’s essential!
Pigmentation around the eyes, on the scrotum, udder and teats of white-faced cattle is an important way of reflecting harsh infrared light and dealing with ultraviolet light, especially at high altitudes. If we expect our cows to remain productive into their teens, the least we can do as breeders is give them a pair of sunglasses to wear!
When it comes to photosensitivity from consuming plants that contain photosensitizing chemicals, white on an animal is a hazard. The non-pigmented areas sunburn, peel, and cause intense pain if shade is not immediately available. Without shade, death can occur.
So, mascara, eyeliner, or designer sunglasses are not just cosmetic when it comes to cattle, they are essential in many climates and environments.
Eye banks (hooded eyes) are also very important, but they do not negate the need for pigmentation. Eye banks and pigmentation are not mutually exclusive. Both are essential!
