#227 – Out to Grass

In our part of the world, it’s time to put cows out to grass for the summer. The drought has complicated things, but I’m thankful to have grass. There are a lot of places worse off than western Colorado.

In our part of the world, it’s the time of year when cows go out to grass. It’s sure a relief for the rancher whose winter stockpile is waning.

These heifer pairs have been on some dry sage brush pasture and are looking forward to green grass. Due to the drought and lack of water, we are pasturing hay ground this year. With the price of fuel and parts, it will probably save us money, although hay will be expensive next winter. These cows are used to electric fence so I don’t have any doubts we can keep them where they belong. The hardest part of the whole thing is getting them down the road. When houses started popping up in the neighborhood, all the road fences disappeared.

After doing a little traveling across the west, I feel fortunate just to have a place to put cows.
