These record-high cattle prices have made most cow-calf producers very complacent. They can do many things wrong and still be very profitable. However, when cattle prices drop, a high percentage of these producers will struggle to keep their head above water.
Wise producers, on the other hand, are producing cows that will be profitable in good times as well as in not-so-good times. Profitable cows are low-input cows that fit their environment. They need very little in the way of outside inputs. Profitable cows are moderate-sized, easy-fleshing, fertile, and long-lasting.
The only way to produce a herd of profitable cows is to use bulls that were produced by profitable cows. The bulls you use account for 90% of your herd improvement. The bulls you use can also account for 90% of your herd degeneration. Which way are you moving your herd?
We will be selling 600 low-input, grass-developed bulls in our five fall bull sales. These bulls were bred and selected to produce profitable cows. You won’t find bulls like this anywhere else!
