Long-term, sustainable profit is a matter of choice – not chance. Most cow-calf producers are very profitable right now as the result of chance. They cannot take any credit for the record-high prices they have been receiving.
The time will come, however, when the only profitable cow-calf producers will be those who chose to make the necessary changes in their operation to remain profitable with much lower calf prices.
