Last week I attended the Expanding Markets Conference in Helena, MT with a group of producers committed to using regenerative practices.  Simply put, regenerative ag uses methods that build soil health naturally while producing nutrient rich food for health-conscious consumers.  They are focused on finding sustainable solutions that produce profit for farmers and ranchers.

We toured the Mannix ranch in Helmville, viewing soil health, grazing systems and grass-fed beef production.  We listened to Ray Archuletta demonstrate visible signs of soil health with his shovel.  We heard creative options for financing, partnering and marketing.

PCC® producer Sean Weinert and I set up a booth at the conference to talk to folks about the grass-based genetics we provide.  It was interesting to note that many of the producers we talked to already have moderate framed, easy fleshing, low-maintenance cattle.  They understand that profitability is tied directly to the cow’s ability to turn grass into beef, without costly inputs.  It’s also interesting that all of them, even the competing seedstock producers, gave credit to Kit Pharo for being the pioneer of their grass-based genetics.

Speaking of the right kind of cattle, I visited PCC® cooperative producer Cody McDaniel in nearby Townsend, MT.  He lives on the east side of Canyon Ferry lake, the uppermost reservoir on the Missouri River.  Cody sells Angus and Red Angus bulls in the Montana and Colorado sales.  His cow herd, calf crop and bull battery are pretty impressive.

After spending the week seeing the results of grass-based production, creative marketing and regenerative grazing, it’s no wonder that progressive producers are making the paradigm shift to a more sustainable and profitable production model.  If you’re looking for a better way, Pharo Cattle Company® has the genetics for a low-maintenance, profitable beef business.  For info on our upcoming November bull sales in Nebraska, Colorado, Montana and Alabama, visit pharocattle.com.  I’ll see you next time on the Herd Quitter® Minute.

Grass vs Grain

We’ve been developing bulls on grass for 28 years. From the very beginning, we designed our program to quickly separate the men from the boys. We are extremely tough on our bulls because we want our least efficient bulls to fall out of the program. Developing bulls on...
