Here at Pharo Cattle Company®, we DNA test all of our bulls to get an Igenity DNA profile on them. There is a lot of valuable information in this profile – but I primarily use it to be more accurate in scoring our bulls for calving ease. You will notice in the sale catalog that I often say a bull has guaranteed calving ease – with a DNA score of 9 or 9.5 out of 10.
We also DNA test our bulls for A2 Beta Casein. Although dairy animals are often tested for A2/A2, I believe Pharo Cattle Company® is the only one testing beef animals. There is reason to believe an A2/A2 cow will raise a bigger calf with less milk than an A1/A2 or A1/A1 cow. More for less! Over 80% of the bulls selling in our upcoming bull sales are A2/A2.
Last fall, we started DNA testing our bulls for Tenet®. Animals that are Tenet® Certified have the genetic propensity for superior beef tenderness. Because inconsistency in tenderness is the biggest consumer complaint about beef, this may be the biggest breakthrough in the history of the beef industry. Sixty percent of the bulls selling in our upcoming bull sales are Tenet® Certified.
