It’s summer camp season and we just finished our wrestling camp. It was a great camp put on by Bryce Meredith, a Wyoming-grown wrestler who made it to the NCAA finals twice for the University of Wyoming.

Bryce didn’t just show new technique, but spent some time talking about preparation, grit and mental toughness: all things that are becoming scarce in an entitled society. He covered a lot of topics and had some great comments. One comment that stuck with me was, “Just because you worry more, doesn’t mean you care more.”

He borrowed this from someone else, but he related it to wrestling quite well. In his explanation he said worry was a cop-out. If you don’t like the results you are getting, do something about it! Get some extra time in the wrestling room, hit the weight room during the summer, eat better, get adequate sleep, etc.

This can be modified to any area of life. Let’s take agriculture, for instance. I get tired of listening to all the “whining.” I get that people need to vent once in a while, but I feel like that’s all conventional farmers and ranchers do. If you don’t like the results, do something about it! Calve in May so you aren’t losing calves to freezing temperatures, buy PCC® bulls so you aren’t pulling calves and checking heifers around the clock, stockpile forage so you don’t have to feed so much, etc.

Worry, on the other hand, doesn’t change anything, except add to your stress level. Bryce closed by saying that in America we have the opportunity to be or do anything we set our minds to. This is so true, I just wish more people believed it!

Quote Worth Re-Quoting

“Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do – but it gets you nowhere.” ~ Glenn Turner
