I can be an “intellectual” at times, theorizing solutions to complex problems. While these whimsical daydreams can be fun, they are rarely practical. Farnam Street explains why:

“Smart people are uniquely vulnerable to mistaking complexity for insight. An executive writes a ten-page memo that could be one. An engineer builds an intricate system when a simple one would perform better at half the cost. The consultant mesmerizes clients with frameworks that conceal rather than reveal. We attach prestige to what mystifies us. Complexity intoxicates both the creator and audience, drugging us with the illusion of wisdom. Mastery isn’t making the simple complex—it’s finding the elegant simplicity that cuts through the complexity.”

Complexity rarely solves the problem. First, explaining the complex solution is, well, complex! Second, implementation is difficult. Finally, follow-through is rare due to the complexity of the solution.

Let me explain. Instead of searching for that new EPD that will solve your calving problems, how about buying guaranteed calving ease bulls from Pharo Cattle Company™. Instead of calf pullers, warming huts, heated tractors, calving barns, and midnight checks, how about calving in-sync with nature? Instead of renting more ground, hauling cows and dividing resources, how about adaptive grazing to increase carrying capacity?

The best solution is almost always the simplest. The problem is, we like to make things complicated. We have a complexity complex. Maybe it gives us a sense of self-worth? We think, “if it was easy, everybody would do it!” Actually, “everybody” tends to follow the crowd, even if it’s over a cliff!

Look for simple solutions. Make your cows do the work. Find ways to simplify your life!
