Based on what we saw at our Nebraska and Colorado sales, there continues to be a large number of cow-calf producers trying to turn the corner from high-input ranching to low-input ranching. I say this because over 20% of the buyers in the Nebraska and Colorado sales were new customers.
Ironically, many of those new customers have been PCC® subscribers for 10+ years. Change comes slow in this business – but change is always better late than never! Those who are unwilling to change with the times, won’t have much to pass on to their kids and grandkids.
The cost of inputs doubled from 2010 to 2024 – and it is still increasing. I have not found anyone who thinks this trend will be reversed. When cattle prices break, expenses will continue to go up. To survive the upcoming fall in cattle prices will require a transition from high-input genetics and management practices to low-input genetics and management practices.
