When time allows, I like to glance through bull sale catalogs and advertisements. It doesn’t take long to see that everyone has bulls that are way too fat. Many look like they’re ready for slaughter.
Fat is beautiful – or so they think. With enough high-energy feed, you can make even the most mediocre of bulls look pretty good – at least for a while. Allow me to provide a partial list of problems created by overfeeding bulls.
- Fat bulls fall apart when you take them home
- Semen quality and fertility are reduced
- Number of sperm cells produced is permanently reduced
- Libido (sex drive) is reduced
- Risk of laminitis and other hoof problems is increased
- Risk of liver abscesses and rumenitis is increased
- Risk of musculoskeletal problems is increased
- Mobility and endurance are reduced
Can you see why it’s been estimated that only one out of three bulls last long enough to have a second breeding season? With the high cost of bulls, this is totally unacceptable!

Bred In – NOT Fed In
Here at Pharo Cattle Company®, fleshing ability has been Bred In – NOT Fed In! We develop our bulls slowly and naturally on grass. Our Solar Bulls won’t be as big or as fat as everyone else’s bulls – but they will be able to breed twice as many cows for twice as many years as the typical overfed Diesel Bull.
