For the last four weeks, we have discussed structural correctness and incorrectness in beef animals. Last week, I said, “For the most part, the status quo beef industry has everything wrong!”

I just received the latest issue of the Angus Journal. As I was thumbing through it, I couldn’t help but notice that all of the animals pictured had at least one structural problem. Most had two structural problems. Some had three problems.

I counted 41 side-view pictures of Angus bulls and cows. Not one of those animals had any slope from the hip bones to the pin bones. They all had Level Hips. Only two animals showed the proper wedge shape. One of those was a bull with no muscle in the rear. All but nine of the 41 animals had a high tail head.

Let the buyer beware! Status quo bull producers have been selecting for the wrong traits for at least four decades. They have the genetics to screw up your cowherd. If you want to produce long-lasting, grass-efficient, fertile cows, you need to educate yourself on what is right and wrong.

Right is right even if no one is doing it – and wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.” ~ Saint Augustine
