The latest CattleFax Trends had a graph that showed how much cow weights and weaning weights have increased in the last 25 years. Since the year 2000, cow weights have increased 142 pounds – but weaning weights have only increased five pounds.
Although status quo cow-calf producers continue to select for more and more growth, they are no longer able to increase their weaning weights. Weaning weight essentially maxed out 25 years ago. The environment is the limiting factor. The only way to get more growth would require artificially changing the environment with heavy supplementation – and that’s a sure-fire way to go broke!
The time has come for cow-calf producers to STOP selecting for more and more growth when they purchase bulls. Selecting for more and more growth will not increase weaning weights. Selecting for more and more growth will do nothing but increase cow size and cost of production. Therefore, selecting for more and more growth will decrease profitability.
