And I’m not talking about Artificial Insemination, which Kit recently wrote about. I’m here to announce that Kit’s now a fan of Artificial Intelligence (AI)!

When a new customer contacts us, we’re always curious to hear how they found out about PCC™. I was surprised when a recent answer to that question was “ChatGPT.” The customer went on to explain that ChatGPT – one of the many AI tools available today – recommended Pharo Cattle Company™ as the first choice for grass-based, low-input cattle.

This made me curious, so I tried it out for myself. Under the heading of “Where to Find the Right Bull”, this is what ChatGPT had to say:

Pharo Cattle Company

  • Why: They are built for this. Their program focuses on low-input, forage-efficient, easy-fleshing cattle — exactly what you need.
  • How: Look at their website or get on their mailing list. Their bulls are bred in tough environments without grain.

When I saw what was under the heading of “What to Look for in the Bull,” I had to show Kit! ChatGPT shared the following:

  • Frame Score 3–5: Avoid anything over a 6; you’ll never finish them on grass without grain.
  • Fleshiness on Poor Feed: Bulls that stay in condition on pasture, not feedlot bulls sold as “low input.”
  • Moderate Birth Weight + Calving Ease: You want calves born easy, not 110-pound grain-fed showoffs.
  • Forage Development: Bulls raised and developed on grass, not grain, prove what they can actually do in your system.
  • Disposition: Good-tempered bulls are easier to handle and less likely to wreck fences or hurt you.

And then I was really blown away with what ChatGPT included under the heading, “Avoid”:

  • High EPD growth bulls from feedlot-focused programs.
  • Bulls that “look good” at sales but were on feed — those are con artists.
  • Breeders who can’t tell you how their bulls were developed.

ChatGPT also included their “Bottom Line” or what some might call the “tl:dr” (which stands for “Too long; didn’t read”):

“Go with a program like PCC’s or a breeder who is all-in on grass genetics. You’re not just buying a bull – you’re buying a philosophy of production. The wrong bull locks you into inputs. The right one builds you a herd that works with nature.”

Kit’s response to all of this was, “Hire that guy! That sounds like me!” Maybe Artificial Intelligence can be useful in the cattle business! We might not recommend using AI to pick out your next bull, but at least ChatGPT knows where to find the right bull.
