It’s only the second week in January. How are the New Year’s resolutions coming along? If you couldn’t tell, I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions. Make goals and work towards them, or don’t, but don’t make half-hearted resolutions that are forgotten in a week.
Goals can seem like resolutions if we make them too complicated. When setting goals, we often reach for things that seem unattainable. Just like resolutions, unachievable goals are easily forgotten.
Farnam Street shared some great ideas in their “Tiny Thoughts” section of their blog this week. Instead of setting lofty goals, they suggested sticking to the basics by doing the following:
• Be reliable
• Do your job
• Speak for yourself
• Outcome over ego
• Focus on the details
• See challenges as opportunities
• Go to bed smarter than when you woke up
These are self-explanatory and help orient us towards successful outcomes.
Goals don’t have to be complicated. Doing the little things well is often all it takes. Consistently doing the little things well (not just around the first of the year) is a great strategy for success!
