I was reminded last week that, unlike other seedstock producers, Pharo Cattle Company™ takes a Systems Approach to the business of producing and marketing bulls to other ranchers. The more I think about it, the more I think this subject needs more discussion. I can foresee three or four articles being written about the Systems Approach.
Let’s start by defining Systems Approach. A Systems Approach is a way of understanding and solving complex problems by looking at the world as a collection of interconnected and interdependent parts. It sees everything from a holistic point of view, rather than as parts and pieces of the whole. A Systems Approach can be useful to people from all walks of life – and it can be applied to many areas of our life.
Here’s A Simple Example:
Most bull producers claim their genetics will solve all problems and make their customers wealthy. Since nearly all bull producers are still focused on increasing pounds per cow (bragging rights) at the expense of pounds per acre (profit), I call BS on their claims – but that is not the point I am trying to make.
In contrast, Pharo Cattle Company™ takes a Systems Approach. While we believe our low-input, grass-based genetics are critical to success, we know true success will require more than just the right genetics. For the past 30 years, PCC™ has actively promoted several management practices that are just as critical to success as the right genetics. We will discuss some of these in future articles (Part 2 & Part 3).
If you are in a hurry to find out what is needed to achieve true success in the cow-calf business, take a moment to review the Ten Steps to Maximize Profits. Those who have taken these Ten Steps are among the most profitable cow-calf producers in the world. They have increased their production per acre, while decreasing their cost of production. The new key to long-term success in the cow-calf business is to Produce MORE for LESS!
