We just finished up our county fair this past week and school will start soon. I can’t believe that summer is almost over! People are gearing up for back-to-school and trying to get one last weekend at the lake or camping trip in the mountains.

I’m also gearing up and getting excited for something I look forward to every year. Our pasture rotations have simplified as we have combined most of our breeding groups. Irrigation has slowed down as we get ready for a second cutting. The timing is perfect for bull workdays!

Bull workdays provide a much-needed recharge. Yes, we evaluate a lot of bulls, but it’s much more than that! It’s great to hang out with all the PCC crew and catch up. We have many side conversations about various things. We discuss new ideas, new genetics and solutions to problems we have encountered in the past year.

I’ve met many prospective bull buyers and had conversations about marketing grassfed beef, which bulls to select for various different goals and needs, and how to get a competitive advantage, among other things. I still keep in contact with quite a few of them and have made life-long friendships.

Bull workdays are much more than working bulls. It’s my “continuing education” credits for profitable ranching! If you haven’t been to a bull workday, I encourage you to attend. The bulls are good, the food is great, and the joking never ends!
