When I returned home from spending some time at the cabin last week, I had a HUGE pile of status quo ag publications and sale catalogs stacked up and waiting for me to go through. I don’t spend much time reading status quo articles – but I do like to keep up on what members of the status quo herd are thinking, saying and doing.
I find it interesting that more and more bull producers are starting to talk our talk. For example, for the last 30+ years, Pharo Cattle Company™ has been the only one who talked about increasing “pounds per acre.” Everyone else was talking about increasing “pounds per animal.” Now, a few other bull producers are talking about “pounds per acre.” Some have started talking about low-input genetics, adaptability, survival of the fittest, moderate size, running their cattle tough, etc., etc.
Let the Buyer Beware! Talk is cheap! When I see others making claims similar to ours, I stop to see if there is any truth to their new promotional chatter. In 98% of the cases, the herd sires these talkers are using are high-input bulls that were bred and selected to increase pounds per animal (bragging rights) – at the expense of pounds per acre (profit). It is not difficult for these bull producers to change their story overnight – but it will take decades to change their genetics. Don’t be duped!
