According to my cowboy calculations, I waste 30 to 40 hours every year waiting on hot water. In ten years, I can spend as much as 400 hours waiting on hot water. In addition to wasting time, I am wasting water. I guess I could use cold water – but I much prefer to wash my face and hands with hot water.
My son, Tyson, added a recirculating pump to his hot water system. He never has to wait on hot water. He does not waste water. However, I’ve heard that recirculating pumps can increase the amount of energy used to heat the water by as much as 50%. I don’t know which is worse – but I am tired of waiting on hot water.
